Central Oregon – Despite warmer temperatures today, firefighters on the Monty and Bean Creek fires were able to significantly increase containment.  Temperatures are expected to continue to rise for the next several days.

A local Central Oregon Fire Management Service (COFMS) Type 3 team continues to manage these fires which were initially reported late in the afternoon on August 5th.  The fires are located on the Deschutes National Forest east of the Monty Campground near Lake Billy Chinook. The Bean Creek Fire is 147 acres with 60% containment, the Monty Fire is 23 acres and has increased containment to 60%. 

A local Central Oregon Fire Management Service (COFMS) Type 3 team is managing the fires, which are burning on the Deschutes National Forest east of the Monty Campground near Lake Billy Chinook. Today firefighters were able to complete GPS of the Bean Creek Fire perimeter and update the size to 147 acres.  Firefighting efforts are now focused on increasing the cold black area between the fireline and the fire’s interior.  This work has resulted in increased containment; the Bean Creek Fire is now 40% contained and the Monty Fire has reached 50% containment.  Firefighters will continue gridding the area near the perimeter to ensure the fire remains within the fireline.

[John Day, Ore.]  Late Tuesday evening two new fires were reported on private land protected by Oregon Department of Forestry’s (ODF) John Day Unit.  The Dissel Creek Fire was reported just before 6:00 p.m., burning five miles southeast of John Day.  While firefighters worked to stop the initial spread of the Dissel Creek Fire a report for a second fire, the Cole Canyon Fire, was received.  This fire is located seven miles northeast of Monument.
