Firefighters responding to Rock Creek Fire near John Day River

Prineville, OR – Fire crews responded quickly to a new wildfire at McDonald Crossing on the John Day River. The Rock Creek Fire burned 907 acres on both private and Prineville District BLM managed land before firefighters stopped forward progress.

The human caused fire was reported on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 pm and grew quickly. BLM firefighters were on scene with North Gilliam Rural Fire Protection District and were assisted in suppression efforts by cool overnight temperatures which helped moderate fire behavior and stop the spread of the blaze. Firefighters are continuing to mop-up the perimeter of the fire today and expect to have it contained by 6:00 pm tonight.

As a reminder, conditions in Central Oregon are already warm and dry. Make sure campfires are contained within existing fire rings and that the surrounding area is clear of combustible material at least 15 feet from the campfire ring. Ensure campfires are dead out and cold to the touch when left.
